A Simple Envelope System for Variable Income

A Simple Envelope System for Variable Income

Budgeting apps built for a fixed paycheck fall apart the first month your income doesn’t match the last one. A digital envelope system doesn’t care — it works off percentages, not a fixed number.

The setup, step by step

  1. List your envelopes: taxes, savings, business costs, owner pay
  2. Assign each one a percentage, not a dollar amount
  3. Every time you get paid, split the deposit by those percentages
  4. Spend only from the “owner pay” envelope

Percentage-based envelopes scale up and down with whatever comes in.

A slow month still funds taxes and savings proportionally — it just means owner pay is smaller that month, which is the honest version of what actually happened.
